Challenges in the prevention of AF-related stroke in Romania persist, shows landmark new European report

27 November 2014

The Route Map and European Atlas on the prevention of AF-related stroke is a new, comprehensive report which shows what different countries in Europe are doing to improve the prevention of AF-related stroke. The report presents key data documenting the burden posed by AF-related strokes in different countries, highlights key issues and challenges in implementing best practice and provides examples of successful initiatives that have made a difference to patients.

Professor Gheorghe Andrei Dan, from the University of Medicine and Pharmacy ‘Carol Davila’ and University Clinical Hospital ‘Colentina’ in Bucharest, was a key contributor to the report. Professor Dan led the development of the FACTS spot registry in Romania, which is featured in the Route Map as a successful model of where data collection on AF has helped raise awareness of the importance of AF-related strokes as a public health priority.
The Romanian country profile shows, however, that many challenges remain in the appropriate prevention of AF-related stroke, including limited diagnosis of AF, lack of focused policies, and poor access to anticoagulation therapy – for example, up to 33% of AF patients at high risk of stroke are thought not to receive effective anticoagulation therapy despite guideline recommendations.
