The Route Map and European Atlas on the prevention of AF-related stroke is a new, comprehensive report which shows what different countries in Europe are doing to improve the prevention of AF-related stroke. The report presents key data documenting the burden posed by AF-related strokes in different countries, highlights key issues and challenges in implementing best practice and provides examples of successful initiatives that have made a difference to patients.

The European Atlas features a country profile on Spain. There are 1,026,000 people living with AF in Spain, of which 10% are thought to be undetected. One in five strokes is due to AF. There have been several important studies, such as the CONOCES study led by the Spanish Society of Cardiology, which have provided interesting information about the prevention of AF-related stroke. Data from studies vary however, suggesting for example that between 52-84% of AF patients receive effective anticoagulation therapy, and approximately 41% of AF patients at high risk of stroke receive anticoagulation therapy as recommended by clinical guidelines.
